Historical Background:
1494-1559 – the Italian Wars, a series of conflicts involved, at various times, most of the city-states of Italy, the Papal States, most of the major states of Western Europe and the Ottoman Empire.
1500 -- birth of the future Carlos I of Spain (as of 1516) and Charles V (as if 1519)
1515 – Aragon controlled the Duchy of Milan, but a year before Charles ascended to the throne, it was annexed by France after the Battle of Marignano.
1516 -- coronation of Carlos I of Spain. The Crown of Aragon inherited by Charles included the Kingdom of Naples, the Kingdom of Sicily and the Kingdom of Sardinia.
1525 - Charles succeeded in re-capturing Milan following the Battle of Pavia.
Spain holds onto all of its Italian territories, despite many invasions during the Italian Wars.
1538 – a Holy League of all the Italian states and Spain is formed to stop the Ottoman Empire from disrupting the Habsburg trade in the Mediterranean Sea.
1538 – the Holy League is defeated at the Battle of Preveza by the Ottoman Empire.
1545-1563 -- Council of Trent begins the Counter-Reformation.
1556 -- Charles resigns.
1558 -- death of Carlos I/Charles V.
1571 – after Charles' death, the ottoman Empire was defeated at the Battle of Lepanto.
