Great story and a true one of how, in response to an I.R.A. bombing, the British authorities grab anyone Irish to serve as the terrorists. The British grab a Catholic Belfast young man (Daniel Day Lewis) living in England who is kind of a general screw-up, somewhat alienated from his father. To make matters worse, not only do they grab the young man, but they also grab his father (Pete Postlethwaite) who is the model of a conservative, law-abiding person. The British manufacture evidence and suppress other evidence to rail-road the two into prison.
The rest of the movie deals with the experience in prison and the long road to justice. It also deals with a father-son relationship, the illness of the father finally prevailing upon the son to straighten out his attitude and his life.
