air raids over Bremen
The crew of the World War II B-17 bomber "Memphis Belle" is heading for its 25th and last mission before going home. Because of this the public relations officer wants to give the crew as much publicity as possible. He tells the men that they are going to be famous. He wants the fellows to make a bond tour when they go home.
The problem, however, is that they have a tough assignment ahead of them. They are part of a sortie of 360 planes to bomb the heavily defended German city of Bremen.
The movie is somewhat slow until they get into actual combat. (The camaraderie scenes are only so-so.) But in combat they are beset with a myriad of problems and dangers that illustrate some of the many hazards the men fighting the air war faced. The ending saves the entire film.
