Historical Background:

Theseus was the mythical hero founder-king of Athens.  He was the son of Aegeus and Poseidon.  He was responsible for the political unification of Attica, an historical region of Greece, which includes Athens.  Theseus built and occupied a palace on the fortress of the Acropolis.
