Brazil hated the Jesuits because, by their defending the rights and interests of the native Brazilians, the priests constantly constituted an obstacle in the way of conquest of the hinterlands . The priests were often hated by the Brazilians and eventually the Jesuits were literally thrown out of the country.
This film is about one of the Jesuit missions in the jungles of Brazil that greedy merchants, politicians, and church officials want destroyed. It is a disturbing movie because it is a sad story but it does hold one's interest and it is somewhat reassuring to know that there are some people still willing to give their lives for the protection of others.
