A terrifically great boxing movie about the middle-weight champion Jake LaMotta (Robert De Niro) who fought the great Sugar Ray Robinson four times.  LaMotta had that killer instinct and was a very tenacious fighter, but perhaps a little too much, because the violence in him spills over into his family life much to his own later regret.  The film holds no punches as it covers the violence inherent in boxing and in the boxer's personal life.  Joe Pesci is excellent as the brother of the infamous boxer.

Patrick Louis Cooney, Ph. D.
