This movie isn't really so much about Custer as about a man (played by Randolph Scott) called a coward because he was not at the Custer's last stand at the Battle of the Little Big Horn.  To atone for his missing the fight, he volunteers to organize the burial of the dead and and bring back the bodies of the dead officers.
